Saturday November 11 - Off-track Koonyum Range Traverse.   Members Only, Limited places
Koonyum Range Road & Wilsons Creek Road
08:00 – 16:00
This is a full day traversing between the end of the East Koonyum Range and the West Koonyum Range, ending in Upper Wilsons Creek.  After a steep descent we will be crossing above a huge landslide that runs down into Palmwoods. We take a safe path across the saddle. Then we scrub bash up to Point 656 which has sweeping views up to Tweed Heads and around to the Byron lighthouse and all over the Mainarm Valley. The hike then follows the ridgeline until we take a shortcut off the route of previous years, scrambling down a safe but very steep descent through the cliff-lines beside a spectacular rockslide that was created by last year's flood. The last hour is a gentle slope through giant rainforest trees into a private property in Upper Wilsons Creek. This is not a beginners hike, and it will only go ahead if the forecast is less than 25c. It will entail a car shuffle rather than a car swap as Dave, our other leader, has a broken foot. If the day is too hot we will walk to a waterfall in Upper Wilsons and have a swim instead. Grade 4, leader Steve 0414 312 917

14 October Forest Bathing with David
Billinudgel Nature Reserve
09:00 – 13:00
We will spend a contemplative morning amongst the ancient pine and paperbark forests within Billinudgel Nature Reserve, near Wooyung, acknowledged as a Threatened Ecological Community. I will offer nature connection activities focussed on the trees and we may also do a fun game. We will walk with periods of silence to be more present and to take in our surroundings fully. It is about a 2 km walk through the forest to the beach and we will return a similar distance. The walking is easy on wide trails and we will finish around lunchtime so plenty of time to vote in the referendum afterward. Leader David. For enquiries contact david@davidroland.com.au

Sunday 3 September - Marshalls Creek paddle, Brunswick Heads
Brunswick Heads Memorial Park
09:00 – 15:00
We will follow the high tide up from Brunswick Heads and then through Marshalls Creek Nature Reserve to Billinudgel where we will turn around for the return journey. We will launch from the beach in the Brunswick River adjacent Memorial Park (Pearson Beach), paddle across and upstream in the Brunswick River for a short distance, then turn into Marshalls Creek opposite the boat harbour. We will stick to the left-hand bank to paddle around the oyster beds where the water is shallow and gives good viewing in the clear waters of the incoming tide. After four km we will come to New Brighton where we will stop for a cuppa, then continue up the creek for another ~5km to the Pocket Road at Billinudgel. There is a grassy bank here where we can stop for lunch, or alternatively return, stopping again at New Brighton (Cason’s Road/ Yum Yum cafe) for lunch. There is a possibility the M1 bridge at 4km is still blocked due to tree fall, in which case we will turn around there. Total length 18km return to Memorial Park (4 hours plus stops).  Most of the journey is within a small protected coastal estuary, however the Brunswick River is open and can be windy or have small waves, so kayak confidence is required for this leg. The tide will be running in at the start but out at the finish and the Brunswick Bar is regarded as dangerous, so we don’t want anyone drifting or not concentrating there. For those wishing to paddle the upper estuary without crossing the Brunswick River, meet at Casons Road, New Brighton (parking is limited) at 10.30am. Total length of this section return to New Brighton is roughly 10km (2.5-3 hours paddling).  Bring morning tea, lunch, water, sunscreen. Wear a hat and shoes suitable to get wet. A life jacket is essential for crossing the Brunswick River. Grade 2 due to the river crossing. Meet at Memorial Park in Brunswick Heads, end of Mona Lane at 9.00am for a 9.30am start. Manali
31-08-2023 08:00 – 21-09-2023 17:00
-SPACE FOR 1 MORE HIKER or 1 MORE COUPLE The trek is through one of the most remote corners of Himachal Pradesh, following an ancient and remote shepherds trail between the Kullu and Kangra Valleys. Beginning in dense forests and alpine meadows above Manali, the trek crosses the Kali Hind Pass to the ancient Gaddhi village of Bara Bhangal in Kangra, the most scenic valley in the Western Himalaya. Each trekking day is a delight with tremendously varied landscapes and a great variety of Himalayan flora and the possibility of seeing fauna such as brown bear, black bear, fox, snow leopard, musk deer, monkey and the Giant Indian Flying Squirrel. On the trek we pass through remote Gaddhi villages isolated by heavy snowfall for most of the year.  There are spectacular views of the rugged Dhauladhar Range especially crossing Thamsar Pass but then on descent another world; a softer landscape of meadows, forests and the cascading waterfalls and one village hanging on the sides of the mountain slopes.  The trek ends at Bir, a small Tibetan village with a monastery. From Bir we drive to Dharamsala the home of the Dalia Lama and the Tibetan Government in exile.    Last time the 12 of us were supported by a dozen staff and 32 ponies that carried our shelter and fresh food throughout.
